Event Review : Fakkah Fuzz 's Malaynial. #standupcomedy #singapore #malaynnial

I contemplated on vlogging this, but there already are a number of other occasions of mentions of Fakkah Fuzz in this blog so I decided to keep it centralised here. Also because video editing takes effort and ya'll know how I haven't really been updating as much as I hoped. Whatever. Enjoy!~

Friday 1 July 2022
The Esplanade, Singapore

Malay + Millennial = "Malaynial". I first heard of the term in one of Fuzz's rap songs and it has stuck with me ever since. I'm really glad that he chose to name his show after it, on a Friday no less. Maybe I'm reading too much into it and it's just a coincidence but I don't really care.

Frankly, I was a bit worried when I found out about this because well.. I'm not sure if it will sell well knowing how statistically Singapore is made up of a non-Malay majority who, to be honest usually can't be bothered about others' lived experiences.

More on that later. Throughout the pandemic I've been listening to his podcast, so I was really excited to catch his new hourly special. Saved my post-Covid show virginity for this!!

Pre-Show
As expected, it was a bit uncomfortable at first but after awhile it was pretty shiok. The show sold-out [I think?] and there were a lot of people, including ones from other races and places!. Good to see a multi-cultural [ ;) ] society coming out to support!~

Of course there were so many Malays and some came in batik or traditional baju kurung looks. I miss this energy from live events!! We had to remained masked though since it was indoors and rewilding took some time for me to get used to.

What were the regulations again?. Should I limit my interactions or is it fine if I talk to others?. Would it be ok with the other person if I de-mask or shake their hand?? How many times do you think others have washed/sanitized their hands?? Do I laugh into my mask during the show?. If I don't laugh at a joke would anybody know??

Opening
Found our seats just in time to catch the first "opener" is Jacky. Nice to see his new material since 2018!. I still can't believe he's friends with Fuzz. Worlds apart...

Just when I'm warmed up and happily proud that he's ditched his weak Korean bits of the yesteryears, it came in the form of Siraj Aziz. The whole time, I secretly wondered if he knows that his name sounds like "Sriracha sis". Honestly, the performance just felt very virgin.

Talking about virgin, Qamarul Haziq then came onstage. His fashion style has changed!! HAHA. I've been listening to his podcast so I was expecting a lot, and it was really nice to see some of the bits packed and delivered properly. Very glad that Fuzz found him :')

Headline
All ready for the main act, it was Fakkah Fuzz's turn to take the spotlight!! No interim/break/chill whatsoever lol. Great to see him again and he still looking good!~ :D

Some would say that standup comedy is about "pulling the rug from underneath", but to me it's the "mildang" that I look for and it was definitely served in his last Esplanade show: Unmarried.

There were moments where I was kept on the edge, and then there were those where it was really comfy and I had a great time unwinding. This show, however, feels a lot more laxed and from what I saw others posted, people seem to find that this was his best show yet.

To each their own, I suppose. I also wish he leaned more into the theme because as the Malays would say it, I think his material could have been more "padu". Nevertheless, there were a few live moments in the show that made up for it #iykyk ᄏ

I know I'm not a comedian, so I refuse to follow the 11-hour rule or whatever the real comics call it. I just remember waking up the next day thinking that the crowdwork, callbacks, punchlines, segues, accents, and act-outs were really well done.

Stories from parents to dating to cats to otters to Malaysia life to Singapore life were all great. It was so good to see his new material in it's full glory. The topics that he brought up were not only funny - they were entertaining stories sprinkled with bite-sized Malay and everyday shenanigans.

"I only observe so I can share with you guys". I am almost jealous at how he can seem to find the funny in things sometimes.

Getting everyone together for the "if it's not on IG did it even happen" shot

Post-Show
To my surprise, he managed to have a meet-and-greet after!! Feels illegal but whatever.

Didn't manage to get him to sign my ticket stub this time :( He agreed to the pose for the pic that I wanted though!! :3

Forgot to suck in my belly :(

Crazy how I've "known" him since 2010, and it's amazing to see how far we've come. Another surprise was that he actually recognised me!. What the hell. I was so confident that he wouldn't, considering the mask and seeing how he has so many shorties now and all. So touching lol.

Overall it was a lovely night back out and a fantastic way to kick off July 2020. ^^ \m/
